Barcode Guide

What Is a Barcode and How Does It Work?

A barcode is a machine-readable representation of information using a pattern of bars, spaces and, depending on the symbology, additional structural elements. A scanner reads the pattern and converts it into data that a computer system can use for identification, tracking, inventory or other workflows.

How to Create a Barcode Online

Select a barcode format, enter data that follows the format's requirements, customize the dimensions and appearance, and click Generate Barcode. After checking the preview, download the barcode as PNG or SVG or print it for your intended use.

CODE 128 Barcode

CODE 128 is a high-density linear barcode designed to encode a broad range of characters efficiently. It is widely associated with logistics, shipping, warehouse and inventory applications. Its flexibility makes it a popular choice when you need to encode general business data in a relatively compact symbol.

CODE 39 Barcode

CODE 39 is an alphanumeric barcode that is widely recognized in industrial and enterprise environments. It can encode letters, numbers and a defined set of special characters. Because it is less dense than some alternatives, the final symbol may require more physical space for the same amount of information.

EAN-13 and EAN-8 Barcodes

EAN formats are commonly associated with retail product identification. EAN-13 uses 13 digits, while EAN-8 is a shorter format intended for smaller products. A barcode generated for a real retail product should use an identifier assigned through the appropriate standards organization or supply-chain process rather than an arbitrary number.

UPC-A Barcode

UPC-A is a widely used retail barcode format, especially in North America. It uses a structured numeric identifier. If you are creating a barcode for commercial retail distribution, make sure the number is valid and officially assigned where required.

ITF-14 Barcode

ITF-14 is commonly used to identify trade items and shipping containers in supply-chain environments. It is designed for applications where a robust, relatively simple linear symbol is appropriate.

Barcode Quiet Zones

The quiet zone is the clear area around a barcode. It helps scanners distinguish the symbol from surrounding graphics, text and borders. When printing, avoid placing other design elements too close to the barcode. The exact required quiet zone depends on the symbology and application.

Barcode Size and Scanning Distance

There is no single perfect barcode size. The correct dimensions depend on the symbology, data length, scanner, printing technology and scanning distance. A barcode that looks sharp on a monitor may not scan after being printed too small or with insufficient contrast.

Barcode Color and Contrast

Dark bars on a light background remain a reliable default. Color combinations should provide sufficient optical contrast. Decorative colors can work in some cases, but always test the finished barcode using the actual scanner and lighting conditions.

Human-Readable Text

Human-readable text makes it easier for people to identify or manually enter the encoded value if scanning is temporarily unavailable. Whether the text should be shown depends on your workflow and the requirements of your label or product design.

Static Barcode vs Database Record

A barcode generally stores an identifier or data value. It does not automatically create a product record, inventory system or online database. For a real business workflow, the scanned value normally needs to be connected to software that knows what the identifier represents.

Testing Before Production

Always test a barcode before mass printing. Test the exact final output, including the paper, label material, printer, size and scanner. A barcode can be technically valid yet fail in practice because of low print quality, insufficient contrast, distortion, cropping or inadequate quiet zones.

Frequently Asked Questions

Barcode Generator FAQs

For general flexible business data, CODE 128 is often a practical choice. For retail product identifiers, EAN or UPC may be appropriate when you have valid assigned numbers. For logistics and specialized workflows, ITF-14, CODE 39 or other formats may be required by your system.
Yes. You can use the Daily Toolkit barcode generator online for free.
Yes. CODE 128, CODE 128A, CODE 128B and CODE 128C options are available.
Yes. The generator supports EAN-13, EAN-8 and UPC-A. Make sure the input follows the required digit structure and use officially assigned product numbers for commercial applications.
Yes. SVG output is available for scalable designs and can be useful for many print and graphic design workflows.
Check that the data is valid for the selected format, the barcode is large enough, the bars are sharp, the contrast is strong and the quiet zone is clear. Test the printed version with your actual scanner.
Yes. You can choose custom bar and background colors. Use strong contrast and test the final result before production.
The tool generates barcode graphics, but whether a particular number or identifier can be used commercially depends on your application and applicable standards. For retail products, use properly assigned identifiers.
